The Where's Wolcott Invitational is a post season event hosted by Team MAX (#1071) and Team GUS (228) This event allows teams to show new student members what FIRST and FRC is all about and what they can expect from the upcoming season.
This event made use of the robots built for the 2010 FRC game, Breakaway. In this game two alliances of three teams each compete on a 27' x 54' field with bumps attempting to earn points by collecting soccer balls in their goals. Additional bonus points are earned for each robot not touching the field at the end of the match.
On May 7th, 2010 our robot mainly played offense and featured a "kicker" and a unique lifting mechanism. Our lifting mechanism was composed of a long fiberglass pole which was kept bent throughout the match. Near the end of the match the pole was allowed to whip upwards, allowing the drive team to latch the carabiners at the end of it over a tower on the field. Then, two winches worked simultaneously to lift our robot approximately 5 feet into the air. Last minute tweaking, zip ties, and re-purposing a yogurt cup and water bottle brought everything together allowing us to successfully lift the bot numerous times throughout the day.
On March 30th-April 1st, 2010 FIRST Team 2168 participated in the Connecticut Regional in Hartford. This was our first regional as the Aluminum Falcons and also the first regional for many members on the team. Although, we performed unexpectedly well, and left Qualifications with a record of (4-5-1) we did not make it to Elimination Rounds. This experience however; for new, old, students, and mentors alike was an amazing experience. This regional was our first step...or should I say flight towards reaching success.
